Italy is quite simply the most well-rounded destination in Europe. Art, architecture, cuisine, landscapes, history: each region is a world unto itself. From Rome and its ancient ruins to Florence and its Renaissance, from the Amalfi Coast to the Cinque Terre, from the canals of Venice to the trulli of Puglia, Italy is a country you never stop discovering.
For backpackers, Italy is ideal thanks to its extensive rail network. Trenitalia and Italo trains connect all major cities, often at very competitive prices if you book in advance (Milan to Rome starting at 19 euros on high-speed trains). Regional trains are even cheaper and provide access to the small towns and villages that give the country its charm.

The cost of living in Italy varies by region. Tourist areas (Venice, the Amalfi Coast, Cinque Terre during peak season) are expensive. But the south (Puglia, Sicily, Calabria) and medium-sized cities (Bologna, Turin, Genoa) offer excellent value for money. Expect to spend between 35 and 50 euros per day for two people on a backpacker budget. Neighborhood pizzerias (pizza for 5–8 euros), aperitivos (a spritz for 5 euros with a buffet included), and local markets are your best bets.
The best times to visit Italy are spring (April–June) and fall (September–October). Avoid August: Italians themselves go on vacation, the beaches are packed, and many restaurants in the cities close.
