Greece is a dream come true for travelers. The Cyclades islands with their white and blue houses (Santorini, Mykonos, Paros, Naxos), the hanging monasteries of Meteora, the ancient sites of Athens and Delphi, and the turquoise beaches of Crete and the Ionian Islands: Greece offers a unique blend of millennia-old history and Mediterranean natural beauty.
Backpacking in Greece is a tradition almost as old as the ruins themselves. The country is perfectly suited for independent travel, with a ferry network connecting the islands to one another and to the mainland. The greatest pleasure is creating your own itinerary, hopping from island to island as the winds and your whims take you. Blue Star Ferries and SeaJets are the main options.

Greece has long been a very affordable destination, and it remains so outside the most touristy islands (Santorini and Mykonos have become expensive). Expect to spend between 30 and 45 euros per day for two people if you opt for lesser-known islands like Milos, Sifnos, Folegandros, or Ikaria. On the mainland, prices are even lower. Gyros and souvlaki (3–4 euros) are your best budget-friendly options.
The best time to visit Greece is from May to June and from September to October. July and August are crowded and expensive, especially in the Cyclades. The Peloponnese and mainland Greece are pleasant as early as April.
