Bolivia is undoubtedly the most underrated country in South America. It’s also one of the most budget-friendly destinations, making it a must-visit for backpackers. From the Salar de Uyuni, the world’s largest salt flat, to the steep streets of La Paz, the highest city in the world, every stop in Bolivia offers an extraordinary experience.
We traveled across Bolivia by bus and by colectivos—the local minibuses that connect towns and villages across the Altiplano. The roads can be rough at times, but that’s also part of the charm of traveling here: you share the ride with locals, take in lunar landscapes through the window, and learn to let go of strict schedules. It’s authentic travel in all its glory.

The cost of living in Bolivia is the lowest on the continent. With 15 to 30 euros a day for two people, you can stay in decent accommodations, eat at the market (the almuerzos for 1–2 euros are a real treat), and travel between cities. Excursions, such as the 3-day tour of the Salar de Uyuni, are the biggest expense but remain very affordable compared to European standards—or you can even enjoy a gourmet meal for 15 euros per person!
The dry season (May through October) is recommended for visiting Bolivia. It’s the ideal time to explore the Salar (which has a mirror-like effect during the wet season, though roads are sometimes impassable), go on treks, and discover Sucre, the constitutional capital with its colonial charm. Be mindful of the altitude: La Paz sits at 3,640 meters and the Salar at 3,656 meters. Take the time to acclimate.
