Our guides: Spain

Explore our guides · Spain

Spain is the quintessential European destination for travelers seeking sunshine, culture, and cuisine. From the architectural extravagance of Barcelona (Gaudí, the Barri Gòtic) to the tapas of Seville, from the wild beaches of Asturias to the Islamic heritage of Granada and the Alhambra, Spain offers a variety of experiences that few European countries can match.

What makes Spain particularly well-suited for backpacking is the combination of an excellent transportation network, a reasonable cost of living, and a culture of outdoor living. Spaniards live outdoors, eat late, and public squares are the center of social life. Immersing yourself in this rhythm is the best way to travel here.

About Our Travel Guides

When it comes to budget, Spain is one of the most affordable countries in Western Europe. Expect to spend between 30 and 45 euros per day for two people outside of Barcelona and Madrid (which are more expensive). The south (Andalusia) and the interior are particularly affordable. The “menús del día” (daily set menus ranging from 10 to 15 euros, including an appetizer, main course, dessert, and drink) are a staple of budget travel in Spain.

The Renfe rail network and ALSA buses cover the entire country. Buses are often cheaper than trains for intercity travel. Low-cost flights (Vueling, Ryanair) connect cities at bargain prices if you book in advance.

When to visit Spain? Spring (April–June) and fall (September–October) offer the best conditions. Summers are scorching in the south (40°C+ in Andalusia).

Learn more about us and our “De Sacs et d'Eau” project

We're Tristan and Mathilde. A French duo who set off for a year of backpacking across South America, with one conviction: the best memories are made along the way. De Sacs et d'Eau is our travel blog, with complete guides, itineraries tested on the ground, and interactive maps to help you plan your trip with everything you need, right in your pocket. To do that, we favour overland travel over flying, buy local, and choose accommodation and businesses run by local people. Travelling far, yes, but with our impact in mind.
