Our guides: Peru
Explore our guides · Peru
Peru is probably the most iconic destination in South America. Machu Picchu attracts millions of visitors each year, but the country has much more to offer than just its Inca citadel. From the colonial streets of Cusco to the mysterious Nazca Lines, and from the dunes of Huacachina to the Amazon rainforest of Iquitos, Peru is a treasure trove of history, culture, and breathtaking landscapes.
We spent two months in Peru, and it’s the country where our philosophy of responsible travel truly came to life. We opted for ground transportation (Cruz del Sur and Oltursa buses) over domestic flights, local restaurants over tourist areas, and accommodations run by Peruvian families. The result: a trip richer in encounters and easier on the wallet.

About Our Travel Guides
Budget-wise, Peru is very affordable. Expect to spend between 25 and 45 euros per day for two people, depending on your pace. Daily set meals at markets cost 1 to 3 euros, and long-distance buses range from 10 to 25 euros for major routes. The biggest expense is often Machu Picchu (admission ticket plus train or trek). In our articles, we explain in detail how to make the most of this budget particularly by choosing the Salkantay trek over the Inca Trail, which is much cheaper and just as spectacular.
The best time to travel to Peru is during the dry season, from May to September, especially for the Sierra region (Cusco, Machu Picchu, Lake Titicaca). The Pacific coast is foggy in winter (garúa) but pleasant from December through March. The Amazon can be visited year-round, though the dry season (June–October) is preferable.

We're Tristan and Mathilde. A French duo who set off for a year of backpacking across South America, with one conviction: the best memories are made along the way. De Sacs et d'Eau is our travel blog, with complete guides, itineraries tested on the ground, and interactive maps to help you plan your trip with everything you need, right in your pocket. To do that, we favour overland travel over flying, buy local, and choose accommodation and businesses run by local people. Travelling far, yes, but with our impact in mind.
