Brazil is a continent unto itself. As the fifth-largest country in the world, it offers such a diverse array of landscapes and cultures that it takes time and preparation to fully enjoy it. From the idyllic beaches of the Northeast to the Amazon Rainforest, and the vibrant cities of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, backpacking through Brazil is an adventure unlike any other.
Getting around Brazil by land is entirely doable, even though the distances are immense. The intercity bus network is well-developed, and companies like Brazil do Sul, Nosso Primeiro Amor, and Pluma offer comfortable trips, including “semi-cama” (reclining seats). For the longest trips (São Paulo to Salvador, for example, is a 24-hour bus ride), you’ll need to be prepared to take your time, but it’s also an opportunity to watch the country unfold before your eyes.

In terms of budget, Brazil is more expensive than its Andean neighbors. Expect to spend between 35 and 55 euros per day for two people, depending on the region. The Northeast (Jericoacoara, Lençóis Maranhenses) and Minas Gerais are more affordable than Rio or the southern part of the country. Pousadas (family-run guesthouses) offer excellent value for money and a much deeper immersion in local life than chain hotels; plus, your money directly supports the local community.
The best time to visit varies by region. For Rio and the south, the Brazilian summer (December through March) is festive but hot and humid. For the Northeast, the dry season (September through February) is ideal. For the Amazon, plan your trip from June through November when water levels are low and forest hikes are more accessible.
